The turning point of the project TSITour
Training on Social Inclusion in Tourism, by including

elderly people as local storytellers for the Tourism Industry

The TSITour partnership reached the halfway point of the project, concluding the last activities related to the first main project result: the TSITour Training Programme. The partners met online for the second transnational meeting, defining the last details of the final publication “Social Inclusion of Local Storytellers in the Tourism Industry” and traced the path for the further project development.

On 8 and 9 October 2020, in the occasion of the 2° transnational meeting, the TSITour partnership met online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though the potential risks were many, especially concerning the online communication (slow Internet connection, technical issues, etc.), the partnership was able to overcome the “screen” barrier, keeping an effective and efficient communication along the two days. The partnership clarified the final tasks before releasing the publication “Social Inclusion of Local Storytellers in the Tourism Industry” as well as agreed on the general structure of the TSITour VET training module focused on the creation of social projects for the inclusion of the elderly. In this sense, the partners discussed the planning phase and the general rules for the elaboration of the learning resources.

Finally, the partnership had the opportunity to re-arrange the Dissemination Plan due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the unprecedented situation that has developed at global level. The partners waited until the very last moment before taking this decision, but the extent of the public health emergency led them to re-modulate the Dissemination Plan. It was indeed a common decision to favour an adaptation of the dissemination activities into an online format that could be aligned, in case of further governmental restrictions. In addition, the partners shared their opinions and set a few pending points concerning the quality management, the Quality Management Plan and the tasks of the Quality Control Council.

As mentioned, the main focus of the transnational meeting consists of the following two results:

  • The publication of “Social Inclusion of Local Storytellers in the Tourism Industry”: the document gathers all the final activity reports implemented by the partners (interviews, questionnaires, collection of good practices and round tables) in the fields of social area and tourism. The main findings of the research activities revealed the important elements and aspects that a training course in the social sector should incorporate to support the social inclusion of older people. Besides, the TSITour project uses as a case study for the inclusion of the elderly as local storytellers in the tourism industry and their active involvement in it. The first draft of the document was created by Defoin, and then, all the other partners added their contribution;
  • The general structure of the TSITour VET training module: based on the main findings of the publication “Social Inclusion of Local Storytellers in the Tourism Industry”, the general structure of the TSITour VET training module lays the foundations for the forthcoming training module. The training module aims to provide the VET students and the professionals in the social area with the methodological tools for the implementation of innovative projects on the social inclusion of the elderly. It will be divided into the following four sub-units that will have specific learning outcomes: Characteristics of the Elderly, Integration/inclusion of the elderly, Social Intervention Methodologies and Stages of Social Project Work for the Integration of the Elderly.

What's next?

Soon, the TSITour partnership is going to start writing down the above-mentioned sub-modules and will keep communicating to verify if the elaboration of the TSITour VET training module meets the defined high-quality standards. After the content validation, the piloting phase of the training course will be organised in every partner country, gathering feedback from the participants in order to further improve the quality of the training content. In this context, older people will be involved on a voluntary basis to act as local storytellers in real travel packages/itineraries.

Do you want to join the project?

Do you represent an authority active on the field of education (e.g. schools, universities, training centres)?
Do you represent a VET institution in the social and/or touristic sector?
Do you represent a SME in the tourism industry?
Do you represent a health care institution or an entity involved in social activities for the inclusion of the elderly?
At the moment, the TSITour partnership is looking for VET students, coming especially, from the social area, who would like to take part as participants in the pilot training course. The participation is free of charge. The TSITour partners are also looking for older people that feel eager to challenge themselves by joining the project as local storytellers. They will meet with tourists and practise story-telling by sharing with them stories about their regions/cities, their history, traditions and other interesting features.
